1. After washing hands thoroughly, carefully insert a removable nose stay through the small opening along the nose bridge of the mask.
2. After draping the lower strap around the back of your neck, secure the mask over your mouth, nose and chin, ensuring that the bottom seal rests fully beneath your chin.
3. Tighten the lower strap using the sliding cord lock; adjust the aluminum nose stay, ensuring full contact around the face.
4. Extend the upper seal (extend beneath glasses, if applicable); secure the upper strap over your ears and behind your head.
5. For a touch-free mask break, release the upper strap to hang in front of the mask and extend the lower strap into a lanyard.
6. To remove, release the upper strap, extend the lanyard, and gently take the mask off in a forward motion.
7. Launder after each use.
Look for an opening in the front black binding stitching, on the front just below center. The opening stitch will appear long, or will be absent completely, and will be approximately 1/4-1/2″ in length. Insert the stay into this opening, angling up and working into the binding. It will be a very snug fit, especially the first time that you are inserting a new stay into the binding of a new mask. You can watch a short demonstration video by clicking on the photo below or by clicking here.
Masks should be laundered after each wear.
For optimal care of your mask, hand wash in warm soapy water, rinse and line dry. The mask materials dry fairly quickly and will be ready for next day wear. You may machine cold and tumble dry low in a lingerie bag after removing the metal nose stay.
Yes. While custom made to be twice as thick as standard metal nose stays, the metal will become bent in the wash/dry cycle and with repeated bending will become brittle and break. Since our mask is designed to outlive the life of the metal, we do supply 2 replacement nose stays with each mask.
Polyurethane foam will burn if exposed to an ignition source generating intense heat and should be stored away from heat sources. Due to the absorbent nature of the foam, the mask is odor absorbing, so you will want to store it in a clean, fresh area.
To maintain hygiene and prevent the foam from being torn or punctured, we recommend transporting the mask in a small cloth, mesh or plastic bag or plastic container. It can also be comfortably worn around your neck with the lanyard fully extended.
Yes, our size Small fits most youth ages 6+ and young adults, as well as adults with smaller facial structures.
Thanks to the 4-way stretch outer seal material, our masks are quite flexible and flex to fit most faces. After taking your facial measurements, use the sizing chart to determine which size is best for you. If you are right on the cusp between sizes, we recommend purchasing the larger of the two sizes. PLEASE TAKE A MOMENT TO MEASURE YOUR FACE FOR PROPER SIZING, AS OPENED MASK PACKAGES WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED FOR RETURN OR EXCHANGE.
TIP: If you don’t have a measuring tape, you can use a piece of string to determine lengths, then measure it with a ruler.
Our size S fits most youth age 6+, young adults and some adults with smaller facial structures.
Our size M fits some young adults and most adults.
Our size L fits adults with larger facial structures.
In most cases, we recommend going with the larger of the two sizes if you are right on the cusp in your measurements. In our pilot program, this worked well for most singers who were on the cusp between sizes.
You will likely experience some warmth around your mouth and nose when you are singing or public speaking in this mask. This is the nature of the beast due to the physical volume of the mask along with the higher filtration levels of the mask materials. The same filtrating elements of this mask (materials and well-fitting seal) which prevent the passage of small aerosol particles also keep some of the warmth and moisture from your breath from escaping.
Yes! Breathing in and out through your nose while you are not singing significantly decreases the temperature of your breath, helping to keep the warmth and moisture to a minimum. You can test this theory on a mirror of the back of your hand.
Small abnormalities (tiny circular air bubbles) are common throughout reticulated polyurethane filter foam and will not affect the overall filtration of the mask. All of our foam has been hand inspected to ensure quality before being sent to the manufacturer. In addition, all of the masks that we have filter tested and will send for ASTM Standard Certification for Barrier Face Coverings contained and will contain these small abnormalities.
For best filtration, the upper seal should be fully extended, even if you don’t wear glasses. You will still achieve good filtration results and secure fit if the upper seal is folded under.
For maximum filtration and best fit, the upper strap should be worn. For aesthetic purposes, if you temporarily wish not to use the upper strap, you may lower it behind your ears along with the lower lanyard strap.
At this time, we’re only offering the mask with black trim and strapping. While the foam color will remain charcoal grey, we are hopeful to be able to offer customization options at a later time. For large future customized order inquiries, please email us at [email protected] to see if we can accommodate you.
The high filtrating properties of polyurethane filter foam make it extremely odor absorbent, so while your mask was being thoughtfully hand sewn and packaged for you, it may have absorbed some undesirable factory odors. This is one reason why it is important to wash before wearing. We recommend a splash of vinegar with your laundering to help remove all unwanted odors, and storing in a fresh, odor-free area.
The VocalEase Mask is designed to provide total vocal clarity while also offering excellent source control (with some aerosol filtration) and fit without gapping during large jaw movements associated with expressive speech and singing. It is not intended to be a respirator (N95/KN95) in the same way that a N95/KN95 mask is not intended to offer vocal clarity and acoustic transparency. An N95/KN95 respirator must provide ≥95 percent submicron particle filtration at an airflow rate of 85 liters/minute, which is about seven times greater than the average airflow rate generated while singing. While our mask offers excellent source control along with the benefits of total clarity, good fit and superior comfort, it should not be used in place of an N95/KN95 respirator.
None of the materials that we use in the mask list latex as a component, including the elastic strapping.
